Pros and Cons of Living in Houston | What is Houston Known For?
👍👎PROS AND CONS OF LIVING IN HOUSTON | WHAT IS HOUSTON KNOWN FOR?
Intro – pros and cons houston
Thousands of newcomers relocate to the greater Houston area every year from all over the country and the world. It is by far the 4th largest city. Well, is Houston a good place to live? Today, I will discuss the pros and cons of living in Houston…starting right now
1 – pros and cons houston
So what are the pros and cons of living in Houston? I also ask these same questions. I compiled a list of my own pros and cons.
Let’s start with the cons..guess what’s number 1 in my list
FLOODING – Houston is prone to flooding. We had 2001 Tropical storm Allison, 2008 Hurricane Ike, 2016 Tax Day and the worst in my experience is 2017 Hurricane Harvey. Would you believe it caused 125Billion in property damage. For me, the changing climate, environment (meeting reckless cutting of trees everywhere) makes us more prone to flooding. Flood insurance is highly recommended here and certain areas requires it when you finance on a home.
Second CON – Traffic. Traffic…why? Public transportation is an ongoing issue, wreckless and distracted drivers..impatient driversg which leads to accident. Every morning, I hear on the news accident here and there that is causing the heavy traffic. If you work in the downtown area, medical center, etc, be sure to sit on traffic during rush hour

THIRD CON – TAXES
Property taxes are too high here. I can see as high as 3.8%, though the home values here are much affordable. A one million dollar home for instance in California, is a mansion here in Texas (if you compare how much home you are getting).
FOURTH CON – WEATHER
It isn’t the best. It is dry and hot especially in the summer. You can literally cook egg using your driveway as a frying pan. Though I will take it than living in the snowy city.
May and Aug is hot, winter is perfect here in November – Feb. I like it since it is NOT too cold.
3 – pros and cons houston
Now, how about my PROS. I have my TOP 6 as to why I love living in Houston.
ONE – FOOD. I love to eat a variety of food. There are so many restaurants here. I am not a fan of cooking so literally I eat at different places and try different dishes. Houston has the best barbecue, crawfish, seafoods. We have Chinese, Italian, Korean, Indian, Cuban, Mexican, Mediterranean, Japanese, Filipino, Thai, Brazilian…everything you can think of is here. The food here is so diverse that you can literally eat out everyday!
SECOND – DIVERSITY – Houston is one of the most diverse cities in the country. It is an ethnic melting pot of Asians, hispanics, african americans, you name it, different cultures are here. You will not feel left out.
4 – pros and cons houston
THREE -JOB market.
If you are in the medical field, engineering, gas and oil, technology, etc, you will NOT have a hard time getting a job. It is home to many major industries like Exxon, Texas Childrens hospital, MD Andersen Cancer Center, Walmart, United Airlines, Shell Oil, Kroger, HEB and so much more.
FOUR – LEISURE, RECREATION and ENTERTAINMENT – We have so many parks here for example Collins Park, Burroughs park, Hermann Park (this is Houston’s Central Park). We also have the Houston arboretum and nature center, Houston zoo, Moody Gardens, Space Center Houston (NASA). As far as entertainment, we have a lot of area where artists can have their concerts, like the Toyota center, the woodlands cynthia woods mitchell pavilion, Houston Grand Opera, Houston Symphony, Theatre under the stars, Alley theatre, Houston Ballet and many more.
We also have several musuems like Childrens museum of Houston, Holocaust Museum, Houston Museum of Natural Science, Art car museum and so much more.
5 -pros and cons houston
FIVE – we have NO STATE INCOME TAX people. This is by far one of the reason why I like living here.
LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST – AFFORDABILITY. It is very affordable to live here. If you want to buy homes, this is the place to be. Investors from all over the country are buying several homes because they see the opportunities of appreciation. Average rental for a 3 bedroom 2 bath house here in Houston is $1700/month or less. It is literally cheaper to buy a home here compared to other cities. I get more home here for the value. I have so many first time home buyers able to afford a home here I also have relocation clients buying homes here in CASH because they sold a their previous homes.
